Dude’s Chronicles 11-121-2019: HiThere…

Image via giphy.com

Don’t worry, I was just being lazy last week.

Entertainment

  • Stumptown – I still really want to like this show but it just seems like something is missing.  Not sure what it is I don’t care for about it but it is gnawing at me. However, I keep watching it.

Games

  • Destiny 2 – I’ve reached level 100in the current season and am still having fun playing it. That is a bit odd to say since it is a lather, rinse, repeat type of experience but nonetheless it’s a good time… for now.
  • Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order – I’d really be enjoying this game a lot more if A. the combat didn’t suck and B. the game didn’t run worth $#1&! I don’t like the combat system. That doesn’t mean that it is bad or broken, just I don’t like it. Even with trying to parry and dodge it doesn’t feel as responsive as the same moves in God of War. On a technical level, this game is garbage level. Load times are a joke. If I die I can walk to the kitchen, get a drink, walk back, and still not be respawned yet. Then there are the frame-rate issues. I’m playing on a launch Xbox One, so I didn’t expect greatness but yikes! This game constantly drops to a chop and perform like trash. There was already two patches and I hope another is coming just for the performance issues.

News

  • Xbox Game Pass – Getting everything from Halo: Reach to Yakuza just makes this service more impressive. I can’t help but think back to the Xbox One launch and how poorly it was handled to how different things are now. What if Phil Spencer had been in charge back then?
  • New Half-Life game – Sorry, it’s not Half- Life 3. It’s Half-Life Alyx and it’s a VR game. Not sure how well this will be recieved but people love the Half-Life, I happen to not be one of them. Good to see Valve working on games though.
  • New Mass Effect game – According to Bioware it’s in “early development’ and I take that to mean an actual game would be about 4-5 years away. Maybe in the meantime they can do those remasters of the original trilogy that everybody is always on about.

Closing Arguments

I was in training all week, which was good. Somehow I feel like getting back to work would be a good thing though.

Thanks for stopping by, please come again.

Dude’s Chronicles 11-7-2019: Working on the Weekend

Who wants to work with me this weekend?

Entertainment

  • She-Ra and the Princess of Power: Season 4 – The show picks back up from the last season but this one is much darker. It features a lot of infighting with the princess group and The Horde is winning more. It left on a cliff-hanger which I didn’t appreciate but it as still a good season.
  • Supergirl – I enjoy this show but I’m not as sure about this season. I’ll hold off judgement until I finish the season, which I have not.

Games

  • Destiny 2 – The Halloween event was fun for a while and I played a good bit of it but it did get repetitive. Kind of started to remind me why I fell off of Destiny 2 when I did. Time will tell how much more I keep playing.

News

  • Blizzard’s non-apology – From what I saw of it and know about the situation, it felt like a child saying ‘I’m sorry the vase is broken’ but not apologizing for breaking it. It didn’t feel like they were truly contrite nor are the committing to changing anything more forward. Feels bad overall.
  • Diablo 4 – Even with how poorly the PR train is going at Blizzard they are still making game announcements.  I loved Diablo 3 and even with my ire of Blizzard at the moment I completely am behind another one of these games and the early view looks pretty good.
  • Overwatch 2 – As someone who was heavy into Overwatch but has not even touched it in months, the idea of a new game is intriguing. The PVE and story is what interests me the most since the grind of PVP is what drove me away from the game in the first place.

Closing Arguments

I’ll be working a good part of the weekend and that is the only thing I have planned. Not exactly exciting.

Thanks for stopping by, please come again.

Dude’s Chronicles 10-31-2019: A Vue To A Kill

Image via movieweb.com

Here we are again, been another week of dealing with stuff.

Entertainment

  • Stumptown – I really want to like this show but to this point I just don’t. It still feels like it is just isn’t pulling anything off. I’ve been waiting for them to flush some things out but even after five episode it feels like it isn’t.
  • Football – Had some other things going on so all I could fit in was the American football, both college and professional. No movies, no shows, just football and Giant Bomb stuff along with some Twitch. Just like last week.

Games

  • Destiny 2 – The Halloween even is going on right now and I’m enjoying it. I’ve weirdly back into after doing a hard out not long after launch. I think the fact that they made the guns more like original Destiny is appealing to me. After the current event I don’t know how much I’ll play but I’m curious to find out.
  • The Outer Worlds – I know I am only a handful of hours in to the game but I am not feeling it. The quest system feels bad. The map system is bad. The inventory system is bad. The upgrade system is bad. The humor and story seem good but it’s not good enough to make me want to play. Instead of playing more of this game I went back to Destiny 2.
  • Blair Witch – I got to chapter four and quit. Didn’t enjoy the game play or the story and the first combat encounter was so bad and dumb I just don’t want to play any more of it. Plus, I ran like garbage on my PC. I have an i7-4820 which has some age on it and is only quad-core but I have a Nividia 1080 and there was still tearing and frame drops. I tuned the game down to ‘medium’ settings from ‘high’ and from 60fps to 30fps but still had problems. Just did not enjoy my experience with the game.

News

  • PlayStation Vue cancelled – Sony is shuttering the service effective January 30, 2020. That means the service will go off-line after less than five years. There are many competitors to Vue that seem to be doing better. Personally, I have Hulu with Live TV and have no issues other than the price. Hopefully Vue’s cancellation is an isolated move by Sony and that all other divisions are doing well.
  • EA Games on Steam – After about seven years or so, EA will be selling games on the Steam store again. EA pushed Origin but I think the lack luster games of late are not helping it sell much on the PC. Getting in front of more buyer certainly can’t hurt sales. Don’t look for the entire EA catalog right away though. The first game to hit the store will be Star Wars: Jedi Fallen order and other titles will follow.

Closing Arguments

Not sure what I’m doing this weekend. Hoping that I can just kick back and do as little as possible. I’m on call for work next weekend so I just want to enjoy the time I do have this weekend. Suggestions welcomed on how to do nothing.

Also, thinking about buying Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC even though I own it on Xbox One. Love that game. Convince me not to buy it, I dare you.

Thanks for stopping by, please come again.

Dude’s Chronicles 10-24-2019: And… Stuff

Image via giphy.com.

It was another week of work. It was another week of dealing. I was anther week. What did you do to handle it?

Entertainment

  • Football – Had some other things going on so all I could fit in was the American football, both college and professional. No movies, no shows, just football and Giant Bomb stuff along with some Twitch.

Games

  • Destiny 2 – I keep playing it but I’m trying to wind up as much stuff as I can before The Outer Worlds releases. There may be times when I come back to the game but I just don’t feel that it will be my main game moving forward. I finished the quest line to get the exotic bow not realizing it went in the heavy slot and not the special. Not that that is a problem just that I was kind of bummed out by it because that is not what I expected since all my other bows go in the special slot. This is what I get for not following the meta of Destiny 2 more closely but this is also what tells me I don’t need to make this my main game.
  • Life is Strange 2: Episode 4 – This has been out for a while but I didn’t have the chance to play it until now. Very sorry that I waited and very sorry that they are dragging this game out. I loved this episode and how hard the turns were in it but I also feel like this game should be over. Please take your time if the payoff is worth it but this speaks to why I don’ t like episodic games… I’m too impatient for a good thing.

News

  • Stadia wifi – Apparently Stadia won’t actually connect to Google’s data centers via wifi at launch. The idea that the direct connection would be the fastest experience seemed to make sense but now that Google says you have to have Chromecast Ultra instead it seems like a confirmation that this is either an alpha or beta period and that the service is ‘not ready for primetime’ yet. For what it cost to be a founder and see this early period I don’t feel that it is worth it but others may see it differently.
  • Fallout 76 Private Servers – For the low, low price of $99 per year you and your friends can have your very own private Fallout 76 server. The only thing that baffles me more than the audacity of Bethesda to charge this much for this is that people are still playing this game. Oh, plus it sounds like they are broken.
  • Delays!!! – Not only did The Last of Us Part II get delayed, so did three Ubisoft games. That makes February a bit lighter for releases but what about spring? I wasn’t excited about any of these games any way and I hope that these delays are just to make them better and add polish. TLOU2 had stated it would not launch with multiplayer and if this delay is just to add that mode I will be disheartened.

Closing Arguments

Plans? No, I don’t have plans for the weekend. I’ll try to kick back as much as I can. As I said, The Outer Worlds is my next game on my hit list and I hope to put as much time into it as possible outside of my football watching schedule. We’ll see how it goes.

Thanks for stopping by, please come again.

Dude’s Chronicles 6-20-2019: Too Many Games

Image via microsoft.com

With E3 over until next year and all the information of everything has been given out and there is nothing left to do or talk about, forever. If only that were true. There are still things happening and games to play.

Entertainment

  • Jessica Jones: Season 3 – I only watched one episode but it was good. When I get some time I’m looking forward to watching some more. Too early for a rating… NA/10
  • I rewatched a bunch of the Giant Bomb E3 shows. Those show run for hours so I didn’t have time to watch much else. If you have limited time I would recommend the Phil Spencer interview. 10/5

Games

  • Mutant Year Zero: A Road to Eden – This game is a lot like XCOM and for that I both love and hate it. The game play is very similar especially since you end up dead and done with the encounter with in one turn. I took a break from it since I was stuck in one of these loops and it was just frustrating as all hell. When I get stuck like this I typically just back off for a while because I’m normally stuck in a certain mindset or strategy and taking time off from the game lets me clear my head of these. I definitely plan on coming back to this game.
  • Into the Breach – This game is tough. It is very good but it is very tough. I am playing on ‘easy’ and still not making much progress. The mechanics are a bit tough for me but I want to keep playing the game and learning how to do it better.
  • Ori and the Blind Forest – I’m a little late to this game but let me tell you something – this game is pretty good. Since I don’t get into platformers I passed on this game when it came out but certain “conditions” were met that made me interested in playing it. The conditions being that they showed stuff about the sequel at E3 and I signed up for Xbox Game Pass. Truly enjoying this game when I am not struggling with the platforming but I am into the game enough that I want to continue with it.

News

  • Elon Musk – This guy is notable enough that he should be more supportive than divisive. If somebody tweets out a photo of someone else’s art, for no apparent reason, the creator deserves credit. Other media such as music, movies, publications, etc. have strict rules about giving credit where credit is do. His argument that someone can find that information in seconds without him posting feels like a farce. What should I Google “that photo Elon Musk tweeted”. Sure would have been better if he had named the artist, not that he had to link to the artist’s Twitter or other presences, and at least acknowledge the person.
  • EA “surprise mechanics” – A loot box is just that no matter what name you use. Loot boxes aren’t inherently bad but how they are monetized in some games is. Don’t try to use words to change this. Take action by making them fair and reasonable.
  • Amazon Game Studios layoffs – First and foremost, best wishes to any of those affected. It sounds like they have a little bit of time and hopefully it works out for them. Makes the future of Amazon’s game development feel questionable.
  • Destiny 2 Stadia crossplay – Apparently Stadia player can only play with other Stadia players. I didn’t expect there to be crossplay with consoles but I assumed Stadia gamers would be able to play with PC players. Makes me wonder if there is a technical reason for this or some weird business/contract issue.
  • The Division 2 gets the Gunner specialization – It’s great that this game is still getting new stuff but it just doesn’t do anything to make me want to go back. They need to add something more substantial to make me pick the game back up.
  • Mass Effect 2 in First Person – Well, those PC moders will do about anything. I didn’t need one more reason to play this game. Alex Navarro of Giant Bomb is doing his Mass Alex series with this game currently and every time I watch an episode I think about starting another play-through myself.
  • Tifa’s ‘endowment’ – Why is it such a big deal that they changed her breast size? The character model looks fine. They did the same thing to Lara Croft and I didn’t see this issue come up.

Closing Arguments

Phil Spencer’s presentation sold me on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Despite thinking the name isn’t great, the service feels like a good value to me. The down side is now my backlog looks infinite. I probably downloaded almost twenty games and I had to put a hard brake on myself to not start them all at once.

Given the price point of $15 for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate I find Ubisoft’s Uplay Plus to be questionable. Ubisoft has good catalog on PC but I’m not sure it compares that well with Microsoft’s across both PC and console.

Well, Chuck and I recorded another episode but he has yet to post it. So…

Dude’s Chronicles 11-30-2017: Come On Christmas

image via youtube.com

Thanksgiving is over and I’m done Christmas shopping. Time for the holiday to get here, right?

Entertainment

  • Trailer Park Boys: Out of the Park: USA – It was funny but just didn’t have the small world charm.
  • A Very Murray Christmas – This has become a Christmas staple for me. I’m not saying it is very good. As much as I enjoy it, I will admit it took me until about the third viewing until I got to that point. It still gives me some chuckles and it does have some heart to it.

Games

  • Titanfall 2 – Jumped back into some Frontier Defense for a change of pace. I really enjoy this game but it wreaks havoc with me when my Xbox One won’t play the disc because it has an HDCP problem with my monitor for some reason. The PS4 thinks nothing off it. For some reason if I hook the Xbox One to my tv then to my monitor it is fine but heaven forbid I just want to leave things hooked up the same way every time I use them. I must be some kind of madman to expect that. It wouldn’t be so bad if other disc games I owned worked, like The Division, without issue.
  • The Division – I pop this game in every now and then when I want to feel sad. This game has some great things but it just tripped over itself and never recovered. Almost two years into the game’s life they are still supporting it but every time I log in I see a dwindling player base and no new reason to play it. Sad.
  • Far Cry 4 – I needed to play something fresh, to me at least. Having only played the trick ending, I started to actually play the game. Upon reaching the end of the prologue I stopped. Not that I don’t want to play more, just not right now. Perhaps in the coming week.

News

  • Battlefront II Robot Players – People making rigs/robots to autoplay for them? It’s not a new idea but given all Battlefront II is going through this is just another kick in the shin. On some level I don’t blame these people. Why? I was trying to complete all of the arcade modes, the player versus AI games. After awhile I got a message at the end of the game stating ‘more credits available in 13hrs’. I didn’t think much of it at first as I had been playing some PVP earlier and just thought that there was a daily limit on credits. That seemed like a crappy thing to do but eh whatever, I was done for the day anyway. The next day is what got to me. I had two more modes on the easy level to do, without having played any games prior to those, after playing one level of the intermediate mode I got a message of ‘more credits available in 9hrs’. I was floored. This was yet another governor to earning rewards in this game.
  • Destiny 2 XP nerf – I wish I was surprised by this. I thought maybe, just maybe it was me when I thought I wasn’t getting much XP when doing solo events. Now I see that it wasn’t the conspiracy trait that I have feeding this. Don’t applaud Bungie for fixing it, scold them for having it in the first place. If you want people to play your game then reward them equally for however they want to play it, not for how you want them to play it.
  • PUBG mobile game – I don’t know what to say. I’ll just quote the quote from VG247.com – “More importantly, it describes the game as “Eating Chicken” game “Jedi Survival.”” Yeah, brilliant.

Closing Arguments

As we hit December and the end of the year it becomes a time to reflect and a time for family. Think of all they’ve done for you and you for them. Or… is it think of all they’ve done to you and all you’ve done to them? Um, maybe just don’t think about it.

Dude’s Chronicles 10-26-2017: I’d What?

Image via qucikmeme.com

Truer words have never been said, please see the meme above. They made it about me after all.

Entertainment

  • Football – Penn State versus Ohio State. We are… Penn State. I root for the Big 10 in all of their games but I do have rankings. Penn State above all else, then whatever Big 10 team can upset the rankings, it gets complicated after that.
  • Twitch – King Macho is still a guy I follow and support. I gave him my Amazon Prime/Twitch support. He had a very solid stream for Warframe and I hope it bolsters him further. He did a crazy 24 hour grind to get achievements for viewers over and over and over and over…  24 hours of anything is hard, staying online and engaged is another. Props out to King Macho.
  • Sicario – Dang good movie. Worth a second watch and a second thought.

Games

  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole – At 8.5+ hours I am still enjoying the game. The Stick of Truth was a fan service and The Fractured But Whole is as well but it is substantially more. Not all of that substance is good but overall I still enjoy the game. The final verdict is still out until I ‘finish’ the game. I keep coming back to see what happens and someday I’ll finish the game.
  • Warframe – This is a better game than I give credit for even though I don’t know where it is going. I wanted to get the Archwing quest completed on PS4 but there was nobody playing and I needed a 10 wave completion in the quest line. That was the point when I thought the game was dead on PS4, only to realize my matchmaking was set to solo, yes… I’m an idiot. After I changed that I found that the game is very much alive on PS4 and other platforms. No, I didn’t get the quest finished. Refer to my South Park issue.

News

  • Metal Gear Survive – Gets a 2/2018 release date. I liked MGSV but without Kojima I’m not sure what to think of this game… whispers pachinko
  • PUBG – Vaulting… coming but blue zone more harsh. I like the changes they keep doing to tweak the game. However, I still haven’t got into the PC game as I am holding out for a console version. Once it hits Xbox, as I think it will in early access this year, I’ll be in but I don’t care to jump in just yet. It does interest me that they continue to make improvements to the game that will likely effect all platforms.
  • Bungie bans… for real??? – The PC version seems to have issues that the console version are unaccustomed to. Bans are being issued and both Bungie and players seem to be disagreeing if the are legit. Hopefully this gets sorted out and cheaters are ban-hammered whilst legit players are allowed to play. This is tough for any game to deal with, the PC platform seems to present it’s own challenges but for all I hope it gets sorted out(even though I stopped playing Destiny 2 on PS4 completely).
  • Kinect – RIP… two versions… no life(in games). So much potential, so little payoff. Where it succeeded was so far outside of it’s wheelhouse nobody even recognizes it.  Microsoft will probably keep reselling the tech behind it but the brand is dead. My favorite memory is this.

Closing Arguments

The Fractured But Whole is pretty good at 8.5 hours into it. I’ll probably get as many hours as possible into it while I’m on-call for work this weekend as I watch football. Life is about balance after all.

Ask me about 4k… wait… don’t… please, don’t….don’t. or a new laptop. I… I… can’t handle these questions… nor their answers.

Dude’s Chronicles 10-19-2017: Status Woe

Image via azquotes.com

People think I’m a pessimist, I disagree. Decidedly though, I am not an optimist. I look around and see things as I see them. Never would I say I always see them correctly but I won’t say I am always wrong either.  Being a realist is what I try to be and to keep things in check. With the way things are in the world and in life that seems hard to do, I keep trying.

Entertainment

  • Football – Penn State was off. This week they face Michigan, go Penn State.
  • Zoolander 2 – Some sequels just don’t need to happen, this was one of them.

Games

  • Destiny 2 – Destiny free for over a week. See the News section.
  • Forza Motorsport 5 – I found that I had to stop playing this game completely. My driving in real life was becoming too aggressive. There were points when I was scaring myself, not that I really did anything bad but I had thoughts that ‘I could just pass on the inside of this corner, on the shoulder, maybe bump the car, drift to the outside of the next car…..’ Best just to leave this game behind before I did something stupid, still a fun game and I’ll probably go back to it.
  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole – I pre-ordered this game and picked it up on release day. It is installed but I haven’t played any of it yet. This upsets me since I was looking forward to this game but it is also making me savor the time that I will be able to play it. Sweet.

News

  • EA shutters Visceral – This is bad on several levels. First off, sadness for those out of jobs. Iron Galaxy has already offered openings in their Chicago and Orlando offices for these people to apply to, props to them and hopefully they can help out and other studios as well. Then there is the status of Dead Space. It’s been a while since Dead Space 3 and likely even longer, if ever, before we see Dead Space 4. Not being a fan of horror/scare games initially steered me away from these games but I enjoyed the entirety of the first two games and what I played of the third(…thinks about pulling out the PS3 to finish Dead Space 3…). The fact that EA wants to “re-evaluate the single player-focused Star Wars game” that Visceral was developing disturbs me. Speaking for myself, I want a single-player focused game. My interests are not in multi-player and the fact that EA pulled this game from Visceral for “re-tooling” or whatever they want to call it saddens me. Are they, and perhaps other publishers, only looking to develop games that have single-player, multi-player, and/or transaction-based purchases as to maximize profitability??? This may be why gamers have been so apt to support indies and this type of pursuit will continue the decline of games in the triple-A title realm. (Who else liked the Force Unleashed games? Asking for a friend.)
  • Destiny 2 prestige raid – It took all of 66 minutes for the ‘higher-level’ raid to be beaten.  Not that I think it should take 10+ hours to beat such a challenge, it seems to undermine the game’s design that its end-game content was  conquered so quickly.
  • Destiny 2 emote glitch – With a silly emote based on a Monty Python  sketch, people were able to find multiple exploits. I saw the like in the  original Destiny with sparrow glitches and it dismays me, but makes me laugh – uncomfortably, that it is still a thing.
  • PUBG no more live patches – Bluehole says there will be no more live patches until after the official 1.0 PC release of the game. This is still slated to happen before the end of the 2017 calendar year.  Personally, I think this will still happen and it will coincide with the Xbox One Early Access release of the game, but… I’ve been wrong before, after all I thought the iPad was going to be a flop.
  • IGN buys Humble Bundle – OK… I guess????? Having never bought anything via Humble Bundle I’m not familiar with them but I don’t see why IGN would invest in them. The fear is that at some point they will tie the Humble deals to the  IGN subscription service, I can only hope that I am wrong and that all the deals along with charity contributions will remain open to the general public.
  • Halo updates – Frankly, I love the Halo franchise. The fact that these games will be updated to coincide with the Xbox One X release doesn’t do much to get me excited. After what 343 Industries has done with the last two games, I just don’t have the interest in the franchise that I used to and that makes me sad. The wreck that was/is the Master Chief Collection still gets to me. I want the game to live on and see new games in the series but I just don’t see 343 as the proper caterer of it, yet I also recognize that they are the only caterer of it. Again, I want to be wrong or on the outside on this one so that the franchise will be good and successful despite what I think of what is happening with it.

Closing Arguments

Last week I spoke of changes, I’m still mulling these over. It’s been busy for me on several fronts and this blog has suffered for it. There is the desire to do better and I’m trying to determine how to do so. Do I commit to doing more here? Or do I commit to somewhere else? Things I did in the past where I did production stuff, video and audio, were satisfying to me in addition to contributing content. Not being the ‘main man’ is appealing to me and I like being part of a team that others contribute too. There is that desire to collaborate and converse on topics that still appeals to me. Maybe I need to find that area where I support others and work in a team. If anybody is looking for a dude please let me know. Otherwise, I just keep meandering as I am.

In the immediate, I’m going to try to play as much of South Park: The Fractured But Whole as possible this weekend but there is also so much football I want to watch.

Dude’s Chronicles 9-21-2017: The One Where I Messed Up

Image via giphy.com

It is a low goal to hit two posts a week and even with that I managed to f-it-up. Tuesday I was all set to post a review of Batman: The Telltale Series only to find that I had overwritten it and this was the only text in the post:

A familiar but refreshing take on a Batman story.

I had far more than that in the review. The blame is all mine and I know exactly what I did. There is no blaming WordPress, only my own stupidity. Before you ask, I overwrote it enough times that all of the previous revisions are no better. This is one of those moments when I hang my head in shame of myself.

Just in case I never re-write my review, I really liked Batman: The Telltale Series. I liked it enough that I want to play the sequel but I want to wait until all of the episodes are out.

Entertainment

  • Football – There were a lot of games this weekend that had me scratching my head. Jacksonville owns London, they really ought to move there.
  • GiantBomb – Congratulations on the chicken dinner you winner winners.  I actually stood up, clapping and cheering when it happened. If my neighbors didn’t already think I’m crazy, they have one more reason.
  • The Tick – After accidentally signing up for a trial of Amazon Prime I decided to make the most of it by watching The Tick. I started out with the new version that Amazon did and it was good. It had that campy/cartoony/stupid feel that I wanted. The only thing that disappointed me was how short it was. I was just getting really into it and then there were no more episode. However, I do see that they have the Patrick Warburton version as well. That will be a definite watch.

Games

  • Destiny 2 – Pretty sure I’ve had my fill of this game. After not playing it over the weekend I jumped back into see what the Faction Rallies was about. All I found was one more reason they added to grind. This is not what I want and I feel very disappointed. It is likely that I will keep hopping in and out f the game but I don’t feel the draw or dedication I did when playing the original. Frankly, I’m not even sure I’ll care or mind when any DLC comes out. That will be a judgement call at that time.
  • Warframe – My curiosity about this game re-peaked after SkillUp did a video on it. I had played it when the PS4 first launched since it was free and there were so few games.  The last time I played it was probably around a year ago and it was a completely different game. Going back to it now feels both familiar and foreign.  For whatever reason, I played it on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The PS4 and PC versions are relatively close but there is a noticeable difference in the Xbox One version. It is not bad but the visual fidelity is not the same. I’ve been keeping myself mostly to the PC version so that I can get some use out of my PC for once and to try to get better with using a keyboard and mouse for gaming. I got out of it for years and… wow… am I uncoordinated.

News

  • Volition Layoffs – Anytime anybody loses their job I feel bad. Hearts out to those people and I hope they land on their feet. 30 out of 200 people is a significant cut. Perhaps Agents of Mayhem wasn’t the best idea.
  • Battlegrounds vs. Fortnite – This seems like one of those arguments that neither side is right about. I can see where Battlegrounds is upset about Fortnite ripping off the ascetics of their game, particularly the map. However, I don’t think they can lay much claim to the “battle royale” style combat that they stole from a movie. How they “accused” EPIC of impeding on them and I’m not sure I agree with that. How many third person shooters benefited from EPIC developing Gears of War? What better way to know how to optimize/upgrade a game engine than making a game in it? Could EPIC maybe not made Fortnite’s battle royale mode?  Sure, but how many other games are going or already trying to copy this? Then then there is the idea that Fortnite did straight up copy Battlegrounds in several ways.
  • MGSV free for PS+ in October? – This may put me back in a tailspin of gaming. I put 70+ hours into this game and didn’t get to what is the “true” ending. Still owning the disc version hasn’t got me back to it but that fact that I can download it and it will be right there…. I used to hate stealth games but I loved this game because, with exception, it gave you allowances to approach a situation any way you chose. There is so much of this  I applied to Horizon Zero Dawn. After looking at the situation I would decide to be stealthy or just outright murderous. Both felt very rewarding and made me think back to MGSV.
  • Atari console – Not sure what to think of this. Looks like a Steam Machine and likely to meet the same fate.
  • LawBreakers free to play weekend – When your game hits double digit player counts… yikes. After watching trailers and game play of this I just don’t have an interest. I never root for a game to fail but I don’t see a path that makes this game succeed. It is as though it was rushed to market and will have a hard road to recovery, if it ever does.

Closing Arguments

If you don’t hear from me next week please don’t worry. I’ll be taking a trip to see friends. If I can post I will but it will be from the road and from my phone.

Dude’s Chronicles 9-21-2017: The Heat is Hot

It is September and we are in the midst of a heatwave. In this month alone we have probably had more 80+ degree days than in July and August combined.

Entertainment

  • Football – Soooo many good games yet sooooo many bad teams.  Just like in real life, there are the haves and the have-nots. The distance between the two are immeasurable.
  • GiantBomb – Watched bunch of their shows but the most weird one was just seeing the Fortnite Battle Royale mode. It looked like parts of it were straight out lifted from BattleGrounds. The art style made the game mode just look strange after watching so much BattleGrounds and the mechanics only stretched that further.

Games

  • Destiny 2 – The review is up even though I haven’t done a raid or a Nightfall strike. There just isn’t that driving need to do either of those events. I waited some time until doing them in the original and I don’t know that I even want to do them at all. There is still a desire to play but just in short hour-ish chunks and those higher level activities will likely take longer than that.

News

  • Steam reviews now have a graph – In an attempt to weigh reviews when there are bombs Steam now shows a graph of the number of reviews over time. Now if only people will pay attention to it and mind what it means is yet to be seen.
  • Fortnite crossplay – It was “accidental” that Xbox and PS4 players were matched against each other.
  • RIP Battleborn – Combine a mediocre game and let it get confused with Overwatch to see a game that never had a chance. Apparently the game will still be playable but updates will soon cease.

Closing Arguments

My pal Brad was kind enough to mention my Destiny 2 review over on his site. Go check out his post and all of the other links he put in it. Thanks again Brad, you’re an alright guy.

Football and games are going to be a nice change of pace after busting hump all week at work.  Ten hour days every day all week suck, that’s all I’ll say.
