Kayla and I are back to talk about no topic in particular but bounce around things like PAX and Metal Gear. There was some issue with subtitles though.

Dude’s Chronicles 7-26-2015: Shot in the Back

lower-back-pain1The official word from the doctor is that I have a herniated disc in my back. The next step is to get an epidural and hope for the best. Please send no sympathy as I already had a pity party for myself and have decided to move as best I can.

ORANGEAfter watching the complete three seasons of Orange is the New Black, I have concluded that I don’t like it. It started out with a good concept and decent story but it never seemed to go anywhere. It felt like the story kept swirling around the same events and never moved on. Perhaps one of the biggest issues I had was the lack of consistency and realism. Granted that I am no expert on prison life but it didn’t seem that this show was true to what it would be like on the inside. There were too many times that instead of brawls or fights the parties would fester about things and then talk it out. Fights and attacks did happen but not at the level which I seem to think they should have.  Another thing about the prison life is how the inmates could live such a lackadaisical life. One day the guard would yell at an inmate for trying to leave lunch early but the next day they walked right by the guard without issue.

What got to me the most was the main character. Piper never takes any care or pity towards anybody else and is completely self absorbed. Centering a show around a character that is this intolerable to watch made the show not worth it. This is a shame because there were some compelling characters in this show but they never got flushed out and I don’t want to return to the show to see if they do. Crazy Eyes was the most entertaining character and probably could have had a deep story but it just never happened. If you like the show go ahead and watch it but I have no desire to see anymore of it.

What I do want to watch more of is Bob’s Burgers. Perhaps the change of pace is as welcomed as much as anything but I am enjoying the laughs.

halo2Upon completing Halo: CE from the Master Chief Collection, I moved straight into Halo 2 Anniversary. The anniversary edition had some nice updates to the in game graphics but the complete reworking of the cutscenes was spectacular. Except for nostalgia, it wasn’t that compelling as far as replaying the game went. The only thing that really struck me was the fact that I had forgotten how awkwardly the campaign ended. My next step is to complete ODST and have already started it. Then I’ll move on to Halo 3. For some reason I decided to go in the order of the actual story timeline rather then the order that the games were released in. In the long run it really doesn’t matter since I have time to get through them all.

Off to do some light back exercises and watch more episodes of Bob’s Burgers.

Dude’s Chronicles 7-19-2015: Netflix Domination

No, I’m not dominating Netflix, rather it is dominating my time. It started with the sixth season of Parks and Recreation. That show still makes me laugh and wish I were more like Ron Swanson. As much as I enjoyed watching that show, I am not enjoying Orange is the New Black. I’ve heard a lot about this show but I don’t tend to agree with the praise it is getting. The storyline is convoluted and lacking in believability. Not that I know anything about life in prison but a lot of what is going on in this show just doesn’t fit together in my mind. Too many people take too much time to talk things out, whereas I would think that a lot more of the situations would more likely end up in a physical fight or worse. However, I’ve committed this much time to it I’m going to stick it out and finish watching it.

I got around to finally finishing one of the games from Halo: The Master Chief Collection. The plan was to go play all of the four games in order but somewhere in the seventh chapter of Combat Evolved something most have distracted me way back when it was released. That was where I picked the game back up at and played through to the end of the first game. I think my tweet sums up how I feel about that experience but I still want to play through other games.

Let’s talk Destiny. I’ve been playing less of it and it seems that that trend may continue. Bungie released some info on upcoming weapon changes and I, as well as others, are not in favor of them. Likely, they put the info out before enacting them to get feedback and I think they are in for some strong blow-back. Essentially they are making exotics less exotic and nerfing guns across the boards.

Bungie continues to meddle with the damage properties of guns to balance game play only to make new imbalances. When auto-rifles were dominating they got the nerf treatment, and now that hand cannons and pulse rifles are dominating they are getting nerfed. There are also proposed changes to exotic items that may be terrible nerfs. Wolfpack Rounds on Gjallahorn dealing less damage and slower recharge rates on Ice Breaker are two of the stand outs to me. All shotguns will be getting nerfed just to try to deal with the over-bearance of Felwinter’s Lie rather than just addressing thee weapon itself. Now we’ll go back to auto rifles and shotguns with high fire rates. Yeah, what’s old is new again!

The continual tinkering with Destiny is its greatest blessing and most annoying curse. They’ve tried to make rewards better and it is debatable how much, if any, the loot system has improved from when the game first released but to continually mess with the workings of the game is a bad thing regardless. Long term players will bitch, moan, and complain about these things but ultimately find ways to adjust. Whereas the casual or light duty players will get frustrated and confused. On the plus side, maybe I’ll actually use that No Land Beyond I have, or not…probably not.

Maybe it is irony or just good comedy that Xur didn’t/couldn’t sell a weapon this week. Bungies says it was a “glitch” and they couldn’t fix it before Xur had to end his visit. So instead or not buying a crappy useless weapon you can keep the strange coins to buy some crappy useless weapon next week, maybe.

Dude’s Chronicles 6-12-2015: A Day Without Rain

sunshineIt’s a beautiful day but I’m not going outside.

2891183-batman-arkham_knight-review_promo_20150618This week I tried to play as little Destiny as possible. It feels good to not be playing that game. The fews times I did play were not enjoyable and only reinforced my distain for the game. Perhaps it was Bungie’s lackluster handling of Bungie Day that finally pushed me over the edge. Instead of Destiny, I payed Batman: Arkham Knight. I’m not quite done with it yet and still have some mixed thoughts about it.

I’ve also been devoting a lot of time to Netflix by watching things like….

Batman_ver2Because it was there and I still think Michael Keaton is the best Batman, after Adam West of course.

cake-posterI didn’t know anything about this movie or the fact that people were making a big deal about it. After watching it I see why. It is not what anybody would have expected from Jennifer Aniston but perhaps they should. I won’t go and tell you that it is as fantastic as people are making it out to be but it was worth watching. Unfortunately I identified with part of this movie, the main character’s chronic pain. I’ll tell you that when you have that kind of pain you are not only in misery, you are a miserable person.

ex_3006711bWho doesn’t love these movies? They keep getting worse every time and that just makes them even more glorious.

01-Road-House-frontRoad House! Which of course has to be said as…

familyguyroadhouseThen there is…

frankensteinWhich is not really worth watching.

unbreakable-kimmy-schmidt1Which is funny but not as funny as 30 Rock. Tina Fey is a funny lady but this series just doesn’t have the same appeal as 30 Rock.

Maybe if I could watch Netflix outside I would go out.

Destiny: The Rant

Destiny-HD

Many have stated their distain for Destiny and I have largely refrained from it but events of late have just struck me wrong. Complaints can go back to Destiny’s inception and while some have been corrected others carry on. At the heart of things, however, it is not Destiny that is broken, it is Bungie. This studio has failed to live up to their own hype on both expansion sets as well as the main game. Promises of improved storytelling have not materialized and broken reward systems are still broken at best.

The House of Wolves did some to correct the wrongs that were thrust upon players but Bungie continues to disrespect its players. The recent announcement of The Taken King should have been a cause for joy but rather became a source of ire. The cost of $40 was tenuous at best since it equals the cost of both the previous expansions and still has not clearly defined what will be in The Taken King. Bungie’s stance of ambiguity has long become tired and annoying yet they persist with it, standing over players like the omnipotent God of their game and we their subjects. Those that have not already been over-devoted to game get the best deal by getting the base game and all the DLC up to and including The Taken King for a cool $80.

The inclusion of exclusive items in the $80 edition caused yet another fervor that Bungie decided to quell with gasoline rather than water. Whether emotes are important to you or not, frankly the exotic items would be far more valuable in game, it is a poor position to make it so that loyal players that have been part of the game since the beginning would not have access to these. Bungie had the perfect opportunity to extend an olive branch and gain some good will but they chose to further irritate their players by offering the exclusive content for all players for an additional $20. If you do the math, that means current players must shell out $60 despite already owning all of the other content and new players get everything for only $80.

Perhaps the last straw came today, Bungie Day. The seventh day of the seventh month has always been a special day to Bungie and its community. In the past there were special playlists in Halo or other events. Today though, Bungie crapped out a couple videos and announced a few contests. Essentially they put together an homage to players grinding and offered them ways to do more of it. There are no special playlists or games types, much less in game rewards. It feels less like a hug and more like a thumb to the nose to be given nothing more than a chance to grind more in a game over rot with grinding and absent of reward. What is a fair reward for your efforts? According to Bungie it is a cosmetic banner.

Personally, this all means it is time to take another break from Destiny. Time away granted perspective previously and perhaps can do so again. A chance to play the Master Chief Collection and see if maybe we thought too much of Bungie and their games to begin with. At the very least, time to play some games that evoke good memories and little expectation of reward other than just playing the game. Games we meant to be enjoyed, not crush our hearts as Bungie has so unlovingly done.
