Dude’s Chronicles 11-30-2014: Halo’s Hangover

turkey-carcassFor some of us the turkey coma lingers but we must carry on regardless. Unfortunately we now must face the craze that engulfs us before Christmas gets here.

maxresdefault-2-destiny-vault-of-glass-guide-3-the-labyrinth-atheon-s-chamberLet’s get the Destiny talk out of the way. I played one run of The Vault of Glass and it is still broken. Since it was a holiday week, I can understand Bungie not putting out a patch this week but with less than two weeks before The Dark Below arrives one would think that Bungie would want to get things in order. With other games vying for gamers money and time, Bungie better get things right with the expansion content or be prepared to lose more players.

halo-mccPlaying The Master Chief Collection made me realize something…I don’t remember as much of these games as I thought I did. The general story line is there in my memory but when it comes to traversing the actual campaign of the first game I am struggling. In some ways it is like playing a new game and having a fresh experience. In other ways it is infuriating that I have almost no recollection of what to do.

At the half way point of Halo CE, I am noticing some problems. There were a few instances when I fell through the map when near a ledge. During stages of the game the screen seems to slow down or almost stop. I’ve spoken to other people playing the game and they are not seeing these issues. It may be my system since in the last few days I’ve had to pair my controller with the system several times because it no longer was recognized and at one point the system thought I had just plugged in my Kinect even though it was never unplugged. Perhaps there are some ghosts in my Xbox One.
ps-vita-1Believe it or not, my Vita still works. The battery needed charged but it is in fine working order despite not being used for weeks if not months. I find, however, that the reasons it has set dormant still remain as there are no games that compel me to use the device. Free games from PS+ like Sly Cooper and Metrico just don’t interest me. Please don’t think I’m calling them bad games, I just don’t feel like playing them. Dragon’s Crown held my interest for a few sessions but ultimately could not keep me playing.

Alas poor Vita, there is just no reason to play you.

O’well…if you missed the big Black Friday rush get your chairs and computers ready for Cyber Monday! I’ve got some more time to put into Halo. How far I make it I cannot tell. Much like Thanksgiving dinner there is a point when you just can’t handle any more.

Dude’s Chronicles 11-23-2014: Happy Thanks-Halo-giving

Thanksgiving dinnerWe find ourselves just a few days away from over indulging in mass quantities of turkey and accompanying fixings. Many of us will have to put down our controllers and interact with our families. Yuck!

halo-mccI have not played a single second of The Master Chief collection since I last wrote. The match making issues were not the problem, I just didn’t play any of the games at all. I’m saving them up for Thanksgiving morning and following weekend. Just playing the campaigns will fill my time while I’m on call for work.iron_banner_lord

Playing Destiny found me doing two things I promised myself I would never do. First, I deleted my second warlock character in order to create a hunter. Having played the hunter class in both the alpha and beta, I found it to be the weakest and least interesting class. That was the complete opposite of my expectations going into the game. The decision to create a character in this class finally came because of a certain set of circumstances. For one, I didn’t want to play the Vault of Glass anymore due to all the issues I documented last week but creating my hunter caused me to do the second thing I promised not to do – play Iron Banner.

Just to be clear, I still don’t really care for competitive online play but the Iron Banner pulled me in. Since I created the hunter character I took it into the Iron Banner in order to get it some gear that would be capable of getting to level 30. In two days I managed to get to a high enough rank to get the boots and that along with hunter armor I had been saving got the character to level 28. Which made to do something else I didn’t want to do – play the Vault of Glass.

maxresdefault-2-destiny-vault-of-glass-guide-3-the-labyrinth-atheon-s-chamberApparently I have an affinity to torture myself since I made the decision to play a character I didn’t want to play in a game mode that I wanted to avoid. However, reaching the appropriate level to take part in the Vault of Glass drew me back in just for the chance of getting a full set of gear for level 30 on this newly created character. I should have said “fool” set of gear because the only piece of gear I got was the raid boots. Ha ha RNG, very funny.

Beyond only getting the boots as an insult, I found that the raid is still broken. Defeating Atheon should not be a challenge that involves battling the flaws of the game itself. On the first attempt we hit the glitch of only one person getting teleported. Then we hit a different glitch that just killed the entire team for no apparent reason. At first I though the team missed an oracle but I was on the teleported team the second time this happened and I could not find any missed oracles. When the Vault of Glass was first released it didn’t play the way Bungie wanted it to but with their efforts to make it what they want it has become broken.

Remember to be thankful this Thanksgiving. Remember those who are not as well off. Remember to be safe. Remember not to drink and drive. Remember not too eat too much.

Dude’s Chronicles 11-16-2014: Faults of Glass

danger-broken-glassWe are another week closer to feasting on turkey and stuffing but with some recent games we are left to feel like turkeys ourselves. There has been an unfortunate rash of games experiencing launch issues. Let’s just not speak of DRIVECLUB and its horrendous situation. Even the Master Chief is susceptible as matchmaking issues are hurting the launch of The Master Chief Collection. Forget matchmaking problems when you look at Assassin’s Creed Unity with its resolution and framerate problems but worse is the facial rendering that leads to “exploded” faces.

halo-mccEven after having only played the first level of Halo: Combat Evovled from The Master Chief Collection, I’m already more satisfied with it than I was with Sunset Overdrive. Since Sunset just didn’t work for me I traded it in on The Master Chief Collection just to cut my losses on it. The fact that a game over ten years old and has been remastered before is still more appealing to me doesn’t say anything bad about Sunset Overdrive, it just says that my preferences were not met with that game. I haven’t even tried the online play yet with the new Halo set but I’m sure I’ll get there. Maybe that will wait a little bit until they get a chance to properly fix the matchmaking.

destiny-vogIf there is something that needs fixed more than anything else that I’m playing is the Vault of Glass in Destiny. I know, I know, I should just stop playing the game and move on but I really do like the feel of the game. With that said, the Vault of Glass has gotten worse as Bungie attempts to patch it. They removed the “cheese” so you have to battle Atheon fairly but the other glitches that have been induced are atrocious.

Through several attempts at the raid this weekend I encountered numerous glitches that made the event frustrating and not worth playing. (If you are unfamiliar with the raid, this next part may not make a lot of sense.) On one attempt the Pratorean within the Venus gate regenerated health when it was nearly dead, as has been widely reported. During another attempt, I was trying to take out the three Hobgoblins in the Mars portal, landed the Relic slam directly in front of them, well within range to damage them, only to have none of them lose any health and instantly kill me. Teleporting members found themselves shorthanded or within in containment bubbles several times. These were attempts on the raid’s hard mode and I thought the problems were isolated to the higher level raid.

Playing the raid on the normal mode was problematic as well. Our group experienced some glitches I had never been privy to previously. At one point between phases, a player randomly died while walking around. He was not shooting, jumping, or running and there not even any enemies on the map. Gorgons normally kill an entire raid party instantly but our group found that for some reason they didn’t kill the entire group leaving one or more players alive. That would be fine in theory but to get all the other players back those that were living had to die in order to restart the area of the event. Our solution was to use yet another glitch were the player has to kneel in the water and shoot one’s self in order to perish. Then when we did reach the Gatekeeper and Atheon, we continued to have issues. Upon failing, either by death or glitch, there were times when the Gatekeeper or Atheon did not appear on my screen but other players could already see them.

Bungie had the servers for Destiny offline on Friday November 14th but obviously have not resolved many issues. The Vault of Glass is broken to the point that I no longer wish to play it. This was supposed to be one of the best events in the game but it is being diminished by its current state of disarray. Up until this point, the running joke while doing the raid was that the “jumping boss”(the part with the disappearing platforms) was the hardest part of the game. It has now become that the “glitch boss” is the hardest part of the game. Let’s hope that this Tuesday brings a patch to relieve these problems.

I don’t like competitive play online and tend to stay away from it at all cost. However, with the Vault of Glass being in its current state I am more inclined to play the competitive modes. Even though they don’t appeal to me at least they work.

Since Sony plans to have the PlayStation Network down for maintenance for several hours on Monday, I plan on putting some quality time in with The Master Chief Collection.

Thanks for reading this rant, I feel better now.

Happy Birthday PS4!!!

What's Your Tag?

ps4-hrdware-large19It hardly seems like it, but the PS4 will be one year old on November 15th. There have been some bumps in the road and a few promises left to fulfill, but let us celebrate what we have and what is yet to come.

The buzz leading up to the PS4 release was an outrageous combination of new hardware anticipation and hatred towards its rival. The previous console, PS3, was getting a little long in the tooth having been released in 2006. Some games had found ways to push the old hardware to its limits (think about The Last of Us) but it was clear that new hardware was needed to make upcoming games look and feel even better.

resogun_11Fools would believe that the initial sales of the PS4 were completely on its own merit. The launch line up wasn’t as strong as it could have been since
