EA Ready To Reimburse Student Athletes

What's Your Tag?

A lot of people have made a lot of money off of student athletes over the years but it seems that the athletes themselves are not one of those people. That is about to change for the better. A motion has been filed to accept a settlement in the case against the NCAA and EA for using the athletes likenesses in the NCAA Football, Basketball, and March Madness games.

If the deal is accepted by the courts, each player is set to receive $951 for each year that they appeared in the game. It may pale in comparison to the amount of money both the NCAA and EA made from these games but this is a big first step in the right direction.

As a huge fan of college football, I’ve been on the fence about whether student athletes should be paid or not but this is one case…

Another Serving of The Order: 1886

What's Your Tag?

Another day and another video about The Order: 1886. If you were hoping to learn more about the game, you best lower your expectations before you watch the video.

The entire video is narrated by one of the developers and he speaks about the lore of the game. He goes on about how they used advanced game capture technology to truly blur the lines between gameplay and cinematics. Too bad he didn’t say anything in regards to what the game is actually about beyond what we already knew.

Even if you read the accompanying blog post by Ryan Clements, you will not gather much more information. His entire article goes on at length about how good the game looks and how well the controls work. Two things that can only be truly judged in person and which opinions can differ greatly.

I like to look for the oddities…

Nintendo Launches Mario Kart TV

What's Your Tag?

Nintendo has launched Mario Kart TV, which showcases videos from Mario Kart 8. The game just launched today, so look for lots of fresh videos to comb through. The site is searchable just in case there is one particular character or track you are looking to see. However, if you want to watch your friend’s videos or your own, you will need to sign in with your Nintendo Network account.

The fact that all the videos are hosted on Youtube is interesting to me. We just heard earlier this week about their affiliate program and how they will be taking their share of ad revenue. It makes me wonder if part of the game’s usage agreement enrolls the user in the program or if they must sign up separately.

What perplexes me is that if Nintendo has the technology to post to Youtube, why is not enabled for more games? Why…

Disharmony at Harmonix

What's Your Tag?

harmonix-logo_1280.0_cinema_1920.0The glory days of Rockband seem even further behind Harmonix in light of the most recent news. The studio has decided to layoff 37 staff members. In an official statement, the move was called a restructuring but regardless of how you say it people loosing their jobs is usually a sign that a company is not in the best of shape.

Harmonix is in the process of restructuring our organization to bring it into alignment with our current and future product development plans. Unfortunately, this means making the difficult decision to reduce the number of full-time staff. We sincerely appreciate the work of each and every one of these employees. Harmonix is working to ensure that those affected are well taken care of as we make this change.”

The studio goes on to state that current projects, like Fantasia: Music Evolved, will go on as planned and are…

PS Plus: June 2014 Update

What's Your Tag?

The PS Plus program has been a strong point of emphasis for Sony, especially since the PS4 launch. It’s a program that subscribers value and it’s been a money-maker for Sony. As a subscriber, you’ll want to be aware of some changes that are being rolled out next month, along with a new set of free games.

The first change is that there will be two free games for per console beginning in June. That means 2 PS4 games, 2 PS3 games, and 2 PS Vita games for a total of six. This is great for those of us who own all three platforms, but those that don’t might feel slighted by this change.

The second change is a matter of ending confusion. The Instant Games Collection will now be made available from the first Tuesday of the month until the first Tuesday the following month. This will allow gamers to…
